With covid-19 and the threat it poses to lungs, I decided to look into things we might do to protect them. Fortunately, easy natural swaps make lungs more virus-proof than ever!
Swap canola oil for olive oil.
Northwestern University researchers report that vitamin-E in canola, corn and soybean oils (gamma-tocopherol) worsens lung function by increasing inflammation that leads to reduced lung capacity and increased difficulty in breathing. But the type of vitamin-E in olive oil (alpha-tocopherol) protects against inflammation and preserves healthy lung function.
I strongly suggest that you stay away from all gamma-tocopherol loaded oils even after the covid-19 crisis is over (???). Don’t forget that olive oil can also help you lose weight.
Swap chemical disinfectants for natural cleaners.
It seems instinctive to reach for heavy-duty cleaners to protect ourselves. But a study conducted at Harvard Medical School determined that exposure to chemicals found in disinfectants increased the risk of lung disease by as much as 38 percent. Luckily, the EPA reports a natural compound found in thyme oil (thymol) is an effective coronavirus disinfectant. Those living in the US are suggested to try Seven Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner (You can also get it on Amazon).
Swap mouth breathing for inhaling through your nose.
Cells and tissues in the nose produce nitric oxide. Inhaling through the nose drives nitric oxide into your lungs and this can kill viruses and prevent their dividing and spreading.
Do you eat through your nose? No, you eat through your mouth. SO, YOUR MOUTH IS FOR EATING AND YOUR NOSE FOR BREATING; BREATHE IN THROUGH YOUR NOSE AND BRETHE OUT TRHROUGH YOUR NOSE OR MOUTH.
These simple, easy to implement swaps are definitely worth considering; give them a try.
That’s it for now, see you all the next time.
