When one lifts a weight, this is called a concentric (positive) movement where the muscle contacts.
When one lowers a weight, this is called an eccentric (negative) movement where the muscle lengthens.
Proper breathing is also very important; you inhale when lowering the weight (eccentric) and exhale when lifting (concentric).
